Flash Fiction

Flash Fiction: Excerpt from the screenplay Scarlett

I told myself I was going to start publishing more of my work on this site. I am a writer who, sadly, tends to keep her pieces hidden. It’s selfish…I know. Regardless, I want to change that. Here’s an excerpt from a screenplay I wrote (with input from a great friend) 😉. Disregard the current format, I could not get it to transfer from my document to website (I’m working on that too).

I hope you enjoy it and leave comments. I am willing to take the good and bad critiques (as long as they are geared toward my work and NOT other readers comments/opinions).

Excerpt from the screenplay Scarlett

Written by Constance Funches

SCARLETT
What are you getting at?

ERIC
(walks closer to SCARLETT) If you knew I could get you to my brother’s location, and you didn’t know exactly where he was, why’d you run?

SCARLETT
(hesitates) I— I told—

ERIC
Honestly…

SCARLETT
I told you—

ERIC
That was bullshit SCAR, and you know it. I’m not CHASE, I’m smarter and much better looking, so you can’t lie to me the way you lied to him. Tell me why you ran.

SCARLETT
I have to go (grabs bag off the bed and proceeds to leave).

ERIC
(grabs SCARLETT’s arm, snatches the bag and tosses it on the other side of the room. Looks into her eyes intensely) Fine, since you refuse to be honest with me, I’m going to force to hear the truth.

SCARLETT
Let go of me ERIC.

ERIC
Not until you hear what I have to say.

SCARLETT
I don’t have to listen to anything—-

ERIC
(let’s go of SCARLETT’s arm) I think you have feelings for me. I don’t know when it happened but I know you do and you won’t admit to because you’re stubborn, or scared, or maybe just plain stupid. So, you ran. You ran hoping you would be able to kill my brother and never have to see my face again. Then everything went fucking sideways and ruined your perfect plan.

SCARLETT
You don’t know what you’re talking about.

ERIC

Did you ever think to ask me how I felt about you? How I felt about that night? You just think you know everything, including me huh?

SCARLETT
Yes, I know you.

ERIC
Really? Who am I SCAR? How do I feel?

SCARLETT
You are someone who is used to getting his way. You get everything you want. You’re wealthy and by the looks of it you never had to work for anything in your life. You said all that bullshit about teaching me how to feel because you couldn’t control your clearly undeveloped pubescent sex drive so instead of fighting you, I let you win. I let you have what you wanted so I could keep focusing on the mission.

ERIC
Bullshit. If you believed even half of what you said then you still wouldn’t have had a reason to run!

SCARLETT
(shouts) Why do you care? Everything worked out for you. You have everything you want and the means to get whatever else you don’t have thanks to me! So what does that night matter?

ERIC
(walks her against the bedroom wall) Is it impossible to believe that I actually care about you? That maybe I needed you that night and I want you, even now?

SCARLETT
You don’t want me. You want Vivian to come back from the dead.

ERIC
I’m not gonna let you deflect this time or try to piss me off, or…try to push me away.

SCARLETT
I’m not pushing you anywhere—

ERIC
I want you SCARLETT.

SCARLETT
Shut up.

ERIC
And I still want you, even now because for some strange idiotic reason I am beyond attracted to you and I like being around you. Stay with me and forget about ARMAND. Let me keep you safe.

SCARLETT
Get the hell out of my way ERIC.

ERIC
Why? So you can run again? Where are you running to? Where are you going?

SCARLETT
Anywhere that’s away from here.

ERIC
Why are you trying to get away—

SCARLETT
(yells) BECAUSE I HAVE TO! Armand is still alive and he will kill you and your brother if he finds out that you are still somehow tied to me! That blood will not be on my hands. You don’t know anything about me ERIC. Everything I said on the train could have been a lie…it may have been truth. You don’t know. You don’t know who I am or what I’ve done. I will hurt you worse than anyone has ever tried or get you killed. Everything around me dies.

ERIC
I didn’t.

SCARLETT
Not yet… who’s to say ARMAND isn’t waiting outside right now to kill you…or CHASE…or me…?

ERIC
I don’t care if he was out there with an army of vampires. The only thing I care about is you.

SCARLETT
Caring about me will get you killed.

ERIC
Then I will die by my own hand.

A knock at the door shuts down the awkward conversation. Without breaking his gaze from SCARLETT’s, ERIC responds to the knock.

ERIC
Come in.

Door opens and female enters the room.

FEMALE #1
I’m sorry to interrupt, Señor CHASE is asking for you.

ERIC
(still staring into SCARLETT’s eyes) Thank you Lucy. Has my mother woken up yet?

LUCY
No Señor. She is still sleeping.

ERIC
Please let me know when she’s up.

LUCY
Si señor, will that be all?

ERIC
Yes, thanks Lucy. I’ll be there in minute.

SCARLETT breaks his gaze and stares at the floor. LUCY leaves the room. After a moment, ERIC leaves the room. SCARLETT exhales in relief. She picks up her tossed bag from the other side of the room. After she retrieves the bag she exits the room. She walks down the hallway and stops outside of CHASE’s open door. ERIC is kneeling by CHASE’s bedside and they are engage in quiet conversation. She walks undetected to the stairwell and descends, rushing out the front door.
