Have We Been Brainwashed?

With recent changes that have happened in my life, I find myself faced with the daily question of, why the hell are you here? Trust me, this is not some morbid attempt to justify my existence on this earth. It has been more or less, are you doing what you are “supposed” to be doing with your life? In my opinion, modern day society cripples any idea or notion that breaks away from the what is deemed appropriate. Meaning, we are taught how to live, and any concept or thought outside of that is…well…preposterous. For those of us who have a natural inclination to travel the paths not taken, we are forced to look in the mirror ask ourselves, have we been brainwashed?

Society tell us, to get involved in careers that will place us in secure financial positions. Those financial positions will allow us to procure a lifestyle that will enable us to live comfortably. With certain careers that pay extremely well, we can own our own homes, build families, and retire knowing that we have had a successful life.  What if those careers that society says are the epitome of success do not fit us? Then what do we do? Drink our way into an early state of depression from which we may never recover?

Personally, I think that’s bullshit. In order to be successful in our lives we have to do what we are good at and stop allowing people to make us think that we have to do what is accepted. It’s the equivalent to wearing shoes that are two sizes too small ad trying to walk around comfortable all day. Sure, you might get your foot in them but, is the pain really worth trying to look good? Probably not.

In order to find some sense of peace we have to stop brainwashing ourselves into mediocracy and start immersing ourselves into the things we are truly good at. Sure, it may require a bit of work at first but, wouldn’t you rather be happy?
