Cristobal Balenciaga once said, “Elegance is elimination.” Tom Ford must have kept that in mind when he decided to trade in hearty meats for healthy greens. The Texas native and top-tier luxury designer recently expressed his struggle with maintaining his idea of a healthy lifestyle while upholding the “sexy” consistency his consumers are used to experiencing from his global fashion brand.
In a recent article with W Magazine, Ford shares his new fashion practices. The former Gucci and YSL Creative Director explained that he will limit his use of fur and is moving forward with “food by-products” to create his pieces, which according to the design genius, “does not sound sexy.”
Ford goes on to say, “I’m also very torn about this because fake fur is terrible for the environment…people think of fake fur as a disposable thing. They buy it, they wear it a few seasons, they throw it away, it doesn’t biodegrade.”
This isn’t the first time that Ford’s personal lifestyle has influenced his designs in recognizable ways. In fact, much of the inspiration behind his stint at Gucci, derived from his stylish, Texan grandmother.
“My paternal grandmother was very stylish in a very Texas way—everything big and flashy, from jewelry to car,” Ford said.
He goes on to relay that the mental images of his grandmother remained with him throughout his adolescence and helped him to progress the Gucci brand during his tenure.
“…there’s a certain flashiness at Gucci—Texas-inspired—with a certain Western feel,” he stated.
Although designs at his personal brand have progressed into more modern and timely pieces, his recent dietary changes could prove to make Tom Ford’s designs even more appealing. Audiences can keep track of his personal life, brand transitions, and style influences across an array of social media platforms. Even the most hidden fashion fun facts are only, one click away.
